The FLATED Way to Run Westwater
There’s something about waking up right at the edge of a river that sets the tone for everything that follows. I camped at the takeout the night before my Westwater Canyon run, stretched out comfortably in the bed of my truck under the FLATED Air-Topper® and on my Hest mattress that made it feel less like camping and more like a mobile basecamp. Just after sunrise, I woke up to the sound of turkeys gobbling across the river—one of those wild, oddly peaceful moments that only seem to happen when you’re least expecting it.
This wasn’t a trip that had been sitting on the calendar for weeks. I managed to score a permit the day before, packed up quickly, and made it happen. Sometimes these last-minute missions hit differently—less expectation, more enjoyment. Westwater Canyon is one of those places that always feels like a privilege to enter, and even more so when it comes together this fast. By morning, I was rigged and ready, pushing off into a stretch of river that has a reputation for a reason.

Flows had dropped from about 2,600 CFS down to 1,600 by the time I launched, giving the run a completely different feel than the bigger, pushier version people often talk about. At this level, the river becomes more friendly and far less intimidating. Lines are more defined, features more exposed, and every move feels like a you’re gliding. It wasn’t overwhelming—it was engaging. The kind of paddling that keeps you locked in and in rhythm with the river.
Westwater also isn’t your typical grab-and-go kayak lap. It’s regulated for a reason, and that shows in the required gear. A breakdown paddle, first aid kit, and the always-awkward but necessary groover all came along for the ride. It adds a layer of preparation you don’t always think about on shorter runs, but it’s part of what keeps the place as pristine as it is. Once you’re in the canyon, it makes sense why those rules exist.
The run itself is about 14.5 miles and took about four hours to paddle at this water level. It felt like moving through a living postcard. Towering sandstone walls rose up on either side, glowing with deep reds and oranges, while the river carved its way through the desert in long, quiet stretches between rapids. Wildlife made regular appearances—ducks paddling along the edges and a juvenile bald eagle perched above, watching it all unfold.

It’s the kind of place that slows your mind down, even as you keep moving. Quick trip or not, Westwater delivered: a little bit of challenge, a lot of beauty, and a reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you pull together at the last minute. The FLATED Air-Topper® made for the ideal way to not only haul my kayak there but also a comfortable and warm place to stay at night.
