Some adventures are about the journey, and some are about redemption. For Ken Hoeve, co-founder of FLATED®, this East Coast roadtrip was both. Starting from the Midwest and traveling all the way to the Atlantic, Ken set out with one goal in mind—to catch the elusive Bull Red that had escaped him before. What followed was a trip full of fishing, truck camping, and the kind of moments that make the road feel like home.

From the Overland Expo to the Carolina Coast

The trip began at the Overland Expo, where Ken spent time surrounded by fellow adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts, showing off FLATED’s innovative gear. Once the expo wrapped, Ken pointed his truck south, heading into North Carolina in search of big water and even bigger fish.

With his Air-Topper® and Air-Deck® set up for truck camping, he hit the road toward Ocracoke Island, a remote and beautiful destination off the coast accessible only by ferry. Even the ride across the water felt like part of the adventure, with the salty breeze and open skies signaling that something special was waiting ahead.

Once on the island, Ken set up camp and got straight to exploring—fishing along the beaches, wading into the surf, and soaking up the laid-back coastal atmosphere. The weather didn’t always cooperate, but that’s never stopped him before. With FLATED gear keeping his setup secure and dry, even stormy conditions couldn’t dampen the fun.

Day two brought a renewed sense of determination. After missing his chance at a Bull Red on day one, Ken was ready for redemption—and it paid off. With patience, persistence, and a perfect cast, he finally hooked into a massive Bull Red, the one he’d been chasing for years. It was a moment of triumph and pure satisfaction—proof that sometimes, the best catches come to those who keep showing up.

Truck Camping Tips, Tent Rescues & Seafood Feasts

Of course, no FLATED Roadtrip! would be complete without a few lessons learned along the way. Between fishing sessions, Ken shared some pro truck camping tips—the small tricks that make big differences when living out of your truck for days at a time. At one point, he even jumped in to rescue a tent caught in the wind, a reminder that adventure always has its surprises.

As the trip wrapped up, Ken celebrated the journey the best way possible—with a fresh seafood dinner and a chance to reflect on the miles traveled, the fish caught, and the friendships made along the way.
